John Burkel

Coaches
Induction Year: 2014

John Burkel taught at Niles Township for 33 years. One of his most memorable achievements was mainstreaming physically challenged students, for example, one who was wheelchair bound and one who was legally blind, including teaching them how to swim.

John has coached all levels of men’s and women’s gymnastics. He guided Bart Conner from his first straight handstand to becoming an Olympian. He has served as Director of Judges for state competitions, was elected into the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame and started the Niles West soccer program.

John’s accomplishments do not end there. He has judged countless National and World Competitions and co-directed the The Mary Lou Retton Show in Madison Square Garden. He also co-founded the McDonald’s National High School Gymnastics Invitational. He was elected to the National Judges Hall of Fame and has also received the highest score in North America on the International Judging Test.

John has dedicated much of his time to Special Olympics. He has served as Director of Judges for all World Games from 1987-2003, along with also being chosen as the delegate to give the oath for officials at the Opening Ceremony in Ireland.

John’s dream is to have all classrooms visible to parents so they can observe their children as they would on the athletic field.
